One neighbor, Mrs. (Anna Eastman) Johnson, recalled seeing this as a young girl. She described it this way:

"My first recollection is that he seemed very tall. I can see him now, walking slowly past the house pushing a baby carriage with one hand, while in the other he held an open book which he was reading studiously! He was a grotesque figure, wearing a long linen duster and a tall hat, ridiculously tall."
