Clayton Moore came to live the role, long after he had been replaced by lesser actors. When forbidden to wear the LR mask by his former employers, he wore sunglasses that looked like the mask. The owners of the LR franchise later wised up and allowed Moore to resume wearing the mask.

I heard or read a good story about Moore in later years. He was in the Midwest for some reason, in costume at the time, and saw two armed gunmen running out of a bank they had robbed. Moore instantly pulled his two fake pistols and "arrested" the gunmen.

According to what I heard, when a cop kidded one of the crooks about dropping his real gun to an old man with cap guns, the crook replied, "That don't matter, man; he the Lone Ranger!"
