RE: Confederate Flag
WONDERFUL posts, Laurie and Jim!
I'm so very sick of this Confederate "flag flap".....everyone should respect everyone else's perspective. The flag is not (and wasn't intended at it's inception) as a symbol of hatred. To me, a southerner, it is a symbol of MY heritage. My ancestors did not own slaves (and my ancestry has been traced back to Lincolnshire England in the 15th Century.) They came over here as indentured servants in 1692. They fought in the Revolution to help form this country and yes, most of my ancestors fought for the Confederacy - and one or two fought for the Union..... I think we must appreciate all angles of this controversy. Unfortunately there now exist various hate groups who have turned it into a symbol of strife and hatred. And I'm afraid that is all the government and certain organizations and individuals see. "The Past is a foreign country...they do things differently there" - L. P. Hartley |
