It must have been an omen, because as I came to work this morning, I passed Colony South Hotel where the Surratt Society holds its conferences. Six buses, blazingly (or brazenly - take your pick) painted with YANKEE TRAILS on each side were pulling out headed for D.C. With at least 300 Yankees bivouaced in town, I decided to be nice. It also reminded me that, as you walk out the front door of the hotel, you look across the highway to a site once owned by Bennett Gwynn, who testified on behalf of Mary Surratt at the 1865 trial. Early in the war, Mr. Gwynn and his family were visited by over 200 Yankee cavalry men in search of materiels en route to Virginia. This time, those Yankees might be on a bus. |
