RE: Eddie: Lincoln’s Forgotten Son
Hi Eva. In the Turners' book it says she went in December of 1865. It says, "Toward the end of the month, after Tad had recovered from a severe illness, she and Robert traveled to Springfield in order to be present in the city when Lincoln's body was taken from the receiving vault at Oak Ridge and placed in a temporary tomb, awaiting construction of the monument. She could not bring herself to witness the removal, but her visit was grim enough without the experience. It was the first time she had set foot in Springfield since the day she had left it, in high elation, nearly five years before. Memories rode on the winter wind, and her initial glimpse of the gravesite where one day she too would lie left her sick and shaken."
