Abrahan Lincoln; A Biography For Young People
Written by Noah Brooks and published in 1888 and over 450 pages. Mr. Brooks was a close friend of the Lincoln's while in Washington.
http://mrlincolnswhitehouse.org/inside.a...ubjectID=2 The book is probably more appropriate for those age 13 to adult, and naturally speaks favorably of Mr. Lincoln and pro Union in sentiment. It covers Mr. Lincoln's entire life. There was one silly error early on in the book, where Thomas, at the death of his wife, leaves the kids by themselves and goes to find a new mother for them. He writes, "Sarah, scarcely twelve years old was the housekeeper. Abe, two years younger, came next, and Dennis Hanks, eighteen months younger than young Lincoln, was the infant of the family". (Dennis was really almost 10 years older than Abraham) One of the things I like about this book (which seems to be fairly common in many books about Lincoln written prior to 1940) is the focus on his personal character being the foundation of what he was able to achieve in life. Too many books written after the 1940's seem to focus more on his achievements than the personal traits he displayed which made his achievements possible. I enjoyed it. My copy was a nice quality reprint published by BiblioLife. Mine was a gift last year and soft bound. The hardback copy is currently an excellent value at $3.76 (Well, that deals gone, check back and maybe they will lower the price again) http://www.amazon.com/Abraham-Lincoln-Bi...oah+brooks It can be read online here along with several other books Noah Brooks has written including Washington in Lincoln's Time. http://onlinebooks.library.upenn.edu/web...830%2d1903 So when is this "Old Enough To Know Better" supposed to kick in? |
