I agree with you 100%, Herb; but be careful with assigning indentures or slavery terms to just Southern plantations. The institutions were widely spread across the U.S. that existed in our early years.

One of these days, we also need to consider the child labor laws (or non-existent labor laws) that industrialization used for the exact same purposes. Six-year-olds sent to the textile mills by their parents in order to bring home meager wages to help support the family reeks of cruelty also - especially when you see the accident and death statistics related to working around the machinery.
