President Lincoln and the Sioux Indian uprising in Minnesota in 1862

I absolutely agree that Lincoln did the best he could, and that he did a pretty good job. What baffles me is how he could aspire to be a politician, and especially President, who he very likely knew would have to make decisions in terrible situations, yet he apparently was not a religious person, and some question whether he believed in God at all. So from where did he derive his inner strength?
