Mary didn't "know her place" according to the standards of proper 19th century Victorian womanhood. Or, if she did know her place she refused to stay there. This is at least part of what made her so unpopular/controversial in her day.

Ironically I think it's also something that her husband might have found attractive about her. I simply cannot ever see AL content with some docile, uneducated little housewife.
