On the subject of the Branson girls, I read that Civil War Nurses had to be over 30 and plain, preferably with grey hair and spectacles! Surely, our Lew wasn't that desperate!

Apparently not all of them, Maddie. They were both described as 'handsome" - so....no I would not think Lew was desperate! A young man with a strong crush perhaps, but not desperate by any measure....

Didn't Lewis give his diary and a photo to a girl called Betty? I wonder what happened to those. Probably got destroyed when she found out he was a conspirator. I guess that info could have been involved her more than she was comfy with.

Lew did have a VA girlfriend named "Betty" - no relation! HA! As far as we know these items still existed according to James O. Hall, as late as the 1890s -- I'm checking! She married and had kids....
