RE: New Book on Lincoln Photographs
It will be interesting to see what is included in this new volume of "every known pose." Will it add anything to Ostendorf's "Lincoln Photographs: A Complete Album"? I imagine that Morgan will not so readily accept some of the bogus photos that Ostendorf so willingly accepted. However, there still appears to be some controversy, including on this symposium, about the "Eddie" photo.
Books of Lincoln photographs have always fascinated me, from the early work of Fredrick Hill Meserve up to the present. One of the best, I think, was Mellon's "The Face of Lincoln." If you do not have this, try to find one for your collection. It is truly exceptional. On the ridiculous end, was the recent Kunhardt volume, "Lincoln, Life-Size," the purpose of which is elusive. And, finally, Stefan Lorant's photographic biographies were well-done. I notice that Keya Morgan's book can be pre-ordered. I think I am going to wait for reviews , particularly the instructive comments I can always find from all of you on the symposium. Joe |
