I have just finished a biography of Henry Clay, entitled HENRY CLAY; THE ESSENTIAL AMERICAN by David S. Heidler and Jeanne T. Heidler. To my mind there is no question that he would have supported the Union, had he lived into the 1860s. He and Senator John C. Calhoun of South Carolina were bitter political enemies. And, late in his life, Clay condemned succession advocates of treason.
