RE: Happy Mother's Day
I refuse to divulge what the ax handle reference means; suffice to say that it is not related to Mr. Lincoln.
For all viewers: You probably won't see this on the major news networks, but there were some mad Maryland mothers this Mother's Day. In most years, Mother's Day is the unofficial beginning of crab season in Maryland. Generally, the weather has been warm for weeks (which means the waters flowing into the Chesapeake Bay are warmer) and Mother's Day is often celebrated in the backyard with at least a bushel of steamed crabs being devoured by family and friends. Some families were probably rich enough (and stupid enough) to continue the tradition. However, because of the cold spring and cold waters, crabs are not very big, nor are they plentiful. This weekend, they were selling for $250 a bushel mixed and much smaller than usual. I am not a fan of hard crabs unless someone else is doing the picking. I can't stand the feel of spices, etc. under my fingernails, plus you can starve to death picking out that meat. I prefer soft shells (some people call them peelers). I guess it will take a little longer for them to come into season also. No oysters for awhile to fall back on. Months without "r's" in them are not good oyster months. |
