A few weeks after President Lincoln's death, a "deeply afflicted" Mrs. Lincoln wrote a note of thanks to two volunteer nurses who came to the Executive Mansion to give her a Bible that was originally intended for the president. (She was too distraught to meet with them.)
". . . I am very sure my Beloved Husband would have been most grateful for the gift of a Bible-a book so very dear to him, and which it was his delight to read."
