RE: Professor Who Called Students ‘Vectors of Disease’ in Video Is Suspended
"On Tuesday morning I (Professor Mehler) found most of the students in my class showed up despite the video . . . ."

How are the students who attended the class on the first day "expressing their support for the professor," when he expressly requested that NOBODY attend in person that first class?

Rob, wasn't the controversy much more than just the profane language? Isn't a professor who says the following to his students going to cause controversy?

"My grading system is based on the Calvinist doctrine of predestination. I figure if it was good enough for America, it’s good enough for me. The Indians didn’t lose because they failed. They tried everything and nothing worked… You’re all predestined to lose just like the Indians."

RE: Professor Who Called Students ‘Vectors of Disease’ in Video Is Suspended
Roger,

If you look at the interviews that Mehler has given since all this started, it's pretty clear that much of what he says is intended for shock and isn't meant to be taken literally. I mentioned early on that I had a lesbian professor who told the class on the first day if you were a male you likely wouldn't pass. I ended up with a C, so she obviously was saying something to make a point as to her political beliefs. To be honest, I don't think I would want Mehler as a professor, but 60 percent of his students who rated him on RateMyProfessors.com said they would take him again. Given that a person generally can figure that about half of everyone he/she meets will find something they don't like about someone, I don't think that's pretty bad.

David, as for you, you obviously don't grasp my point. I am not saying they were there to show their support (although one would need to know how many of those who showed up were actually vaccinated), but rather in answer to your meaningless point about it being the student's First Amendment right to protest over what Mehler said. Again, no one suggested that they couldn't, whether they were there to support or to oppose him. If after this you still can't grasp my point, then you are on your own.

As an addendum, here is a quote from one of Mehler's students.

Professor Mehler is quite the character. Has a lot of credibility in his field, however most of his lectures rarely ever pertained to the topic at hand but he was very interesting to listen to. Hilarious, but if you don't like cursing, you might not want to take him as he swears a lot. Don't be on your phone in class either, he will call you out.

So Mehler had a history of cursing in class for a while (that review was written in January of 2020), yet no one in the administration ever thought it necessary to put a stop to it? Hmmm.

Regarding Dr. Mehler
Why his viral video doesn’t show you the entire picture of the man

by Dylan Rider
Torch [Ferris State University school newspaper] Reporter

The reporter writes:

If you haven’t had a class with Mehler, the video is concerning. (Emphasis added.) However, that’s Mehler in character. In no way is Mehler being truly malicious. All Mehler was looking to do was make a point. Mehler is 74 years old. With a variant cropping up that has higher transmission than anything we’ve seen, of course he’s going to be concerned.

Seeing such misunderstandment about Mehler and his beliefs is frustrating. I’d encourage taking a class with him and getting the picture that I have.

Well, Rob, it's now obvious that you have had a class with Professor Mehler. Why is it that we had to learn this fact from a Torch reporter?

This has only increased our "misunderstandment" of the situation.

I thought that you have consistently argued that you are not concerned at all about all of the unnecessary obscene expletives used by the Professor in the video.

You wrote: "I didn't realize I was on a forum with a bunch of prudes."

That is what in God's name I was talking about.

Guess I'm on my own then. No problem. Ignoring you has become something I can easily do.

I can't imagine paying to send my son to college and having him be told by a lesbian professor that he most likely won't pass because of his sex.

That's nothing but hatred, personal animus and ignorance.

People like that have no place in an educational system.

I was wondering if you have viewed the Professor Mehler's video in question.

How would you have liked your daughter to see this in her freshman year before the first day of class with Professor Mehler?

I did suffer through that, David. 14 minutes of my life lost - never to return.
I found him unprofessional, profane and obviously mentally ill. He should be fired. He's clearly unfit to teach anything.
