Lincoln Museum

I didn't know where to post this...
This Tuesday I spent a very rainy day at the Lincoln Museum in Harrogate, Tennessee, on the campus of Lincoln Memorial University, which is very close to the Cumberland Gap, a very beautiful section of East TN. almost due north of Knoxville.

The Curator was very kind and we had a great chat. I was able to see close up one of the Volk Life Masks.

There is a B&B that dates to 1700's called the Mill in Cumberland Gap which is a great place to stay.

Highly recommended.

Sounds interesting!Next time that I am in Knoxville (in a couple of months) I will have to check it out.

Mark: I love that museum and the whole Cumberland Gap area! The museum has roots with O.O. Howard-concerning a remark Lincoln made to him about the loyal people of that part of Tennessee. I have also stayed at that B & B+ in the Daniel Boone Room. Its on my all-time top five places to stay.

Craig, its a little bit of a drive up I-75 then East on 25 (I think.) It takes an hour or so and beautiful scenery.

Bill, the curator told me that during the war, the area was decidedly pro-Union. When the college began in 1897 after the war, the area had become very much pro-Confederate and anything "Lincoln" was controversial. I didn't see any Confederate battle flags like I do around Nashville, though.

Funny, Bill, I stayed in that room, too. Its great!

There is a beautiful National Park there as well.

That Daniel Boone Room is really interesting to get too, isn't it? Especially, if you have some luggage! The building was once the home of a Confederate officer. I didn't see any Confederate battle flags around there either. And speaking of those flags-I recently saw two of them on tall metal poles flying here in Michigan-I don't see that very often!
