RE: Who Said This?
Both answers are incorrect.

Our author " was an American politician, newspaper editor, and writer from Pennsylvania. He served as a Republican member of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives from 1858 to 1859 and 1865 to 1866 as well as a member of the Pennsylvania State Senate for the 18th district in 1861 and the 4th district from 1873 to 1874." (from Wikipedia)

So when is this "Old Enough To Know Better" supposed to kick in?

RE: Who Said This?
Congratulations Anita. It was Alexander McClure.
This was a tough trivia question.

The prize committee has searched our vault and you have won (you may want to sit down before you read any further) a two years membership for the same price as a one year membership to the Lincoln Discussion Symposium.

RE: Who Said This?
Now try this .... Who said these words :-

"When our President was in America he honoured the memory of Abraham Lincoln; and Abraham Lincoln was one of the greatest men of the last century —he was one of the men who upheld the rights of the people—and Abraham Lincoln's words are words I recommend to you now. When Abraham Lincoln was elected as representative of the American people he said: "If elected, I shall consider the whole people of Sagamon"—the constituency he represented—"my constituents, as well those who oppose me as those who support me. While acting as their representative I shall be governed by their will on all such subjects on which I have the means of knowing what that will is"

Is king o' men for a' that” Robert Burns

RE: Who Said This?
No Roger, this person was 17 years older than Jean Monnet.

The person who said the words was defending himself from criticism. He spoke in English . Those that were criticising him also spoke English most of the time during the debate , but sometimes chose to speak in another language.

"When our President was in America he honoured the memory of Abraham Lincoln; and Abraham Lincoln was one of the greatest men of the last century —he was one of the men who upheld the rights of the people—and Abraham Lincoln's words are words I recommend to you now. RE: Who Said This?
Nothing to do with United Nations, Gene.
Sorry Anita.... I thought someone would say Mandela but it's a No.

The man talking admired, at one stage, the Austrian-Hungarian style of government. The " our President " that he was talking about was not a formally recognised President when he visited the United States.
