RE: Extra Credit Questions
I remember Lincoln saying something about emigrating to Russia. He says something (I can't recall the exact quote) about emigrating to Russia because at least their despotism was pure and without hypocrisy. I don't remember who he said it to, when he said it, or what the context was.

RE: Extra Credit Questions
Thanks for posting this question Michael. It was in a letter he wrote to Joshua Speed in 1855.
"I am not a Know-Nothing. That is certain. How could I be? How can any one who abhors the oppression of negroes, be in favor or degrading classes of white people? Our progress in degeneracy appears to me to be pretty rapid. As a nation, we began by declaring that "all men are created equal." We now practically read it "all men are created equal, except negroes" When the Know-Nothings get control, it will read "all men are created equal, except negroes, and foreigners, and Catholics." When it comes to this I should prefer emigrating to some country where they make no pretence of loving liberty -- to Russia, for instance, where despotism can be taken pure, and without the base alloy of hypocracy [sic]." |

RE: Extra Credit Questions
Congratulations to both of you . I was going to struggle for hints..... if I'd seen the question a week ago I'd have no idea as to the answer.

No googling please.
The first ever statue of Abraham Lincoln was dedicated on April 14, 1866. In what American city was it located? ![]() |

RE: Extra Credit Questions
Washington is too obvious, and I know it wasn't Springfield, so I'm going to say Buffalo.

RE: Extra Credit Questions
I'll throw out a guess and say Lincoln, IL. Having named their town after him even before he was President, maybe they were the fastest on the draw to commemorate him after his death.

RE: Extra Credit Questions
Buffalo and Lincoln are incorrect, and it was in the U.S.A.

RE: Extra Credit Questions
I feel like maybe I should be exempt from answering this as co-founder of the Lincoln Sculptures Project (and related sculpture map). But I will answer nonetheless!
![]() It was in San Francisco. It stood in front of a school and was unfortunately lost during the 1906 earthquake and subsequent fire. |
