The Spirit Divided- Memoires of Civil War Chaplains
This is a book on Union Chaplains. A seperate book has memoirs of Confederate Chaplains.
Edited by Benedict Maryniak and John Brinsfield. I gave this book a three star rating out of five on Amazon because the editing was weak. Most of the book consisted of exerts from diaries and letters, which were very interesting. This material was about their experience in camp, on the battlefield and serving in hospitals. One Chaplain was a prisoner at Libby Prison for a while. In contrast, there was enough other material they quoted from that was not interesting to me, enough that it was noticeable and detracted from the book. The print was small which made the book more difficult to read. The maps and photographs were all in the front of the book, and not placed where they matched up with the stories. On five of the seven maps, the print was to small for the maps to be of much use. The bibliography was good, I looked up some of the book reference and found them in the Internet Archives. On the whole, the book was fair, it had the potential to be much better. Here is the Amazon site https://www.amazon.com/Spirit-Divided-Me...475&sr=8-1 Most of the Amazon reviews are for a different book on Confederate Chaplains, written by the same authors. So when is this "Old Enough To Know Better" supposed to kick in? |
