Does anyone Know..
Found this in American Heritage Civil War. I heard it before but I can't remember who actually said it.
Many years after the event, a Confederate officer associated with Booth:was quoted as saying: We knew that we were beaten, and there was a general fear among Southern men that the North would impose terms so severe that the . . South could not meet them. Many plans were discussed . . looking to the reaching of a settlement on terms the South could endure. One plan which found favor was to capture Lincoln, take him into the Confederacy, and with him as a hostage, treat for peace. I was party to this plot. . . The venture needed desperate men and the exercise of great caution and skill as well. Somehow the men in the plot became impatient and finally a new conspiracy was hatched which contemplated the killing of Lincoln. |

RE: Does anyone Know..
It was Confederate Col. James Gordon. The context of the quote is that in 1909, Gordon had been appointed by Mississippi's governor to temporarily fill a vacancy in the U.S. Senate. But a scandal broke out when a newspaper reported that he had once been a fugitive linked to Booth's plot before the government dropped him as a suspect. After the scandal broke, Gordon admitted involvement in Booth's kidnapping plot, but denied any knowledge of Booth's later assassination plot.
