Here I Have Lived - A History of Lincoln's Springfield
Written by Paul Angle.
History of Springfield, IL up to 1865 and the burial of Lincoln.

Intersting book. Helps to put the times in which Lincoln lived in a better perspective.
Has some interesting details of events in Springfield. Originally published in 1935, this updated edition (1971) was needed since the Lincoln Home and the old State Capitol building had been completely restored during that time period.

It is not a personal book about Lincoln, it is a history of Springfield and the events that shaped and influenced the community including Lincoln, while keeping in mind Lincoln's influence on his own community.

Driving or walking around Springfield, it is a very different city than it was in Lincoln's day. There are enough old buildings and historical markers to keep the memories of events long passed alive and appreciated. This book helps you to appreciate these reminders of an earlier time and the day to day events in Springfield when Lincoln lived here.

Mine is a soft cover copy.

So when is this "Old Enough To Know Better" supposed to kick in?

Thanks, Gene. The book is in the list entitled The Essential Lincoln Bookshelf as determined by the Abraham Lincoln Book Shop:

Anyone have all 177 books?

RE: Here I Have Lived - A History of Lincoln's Springfield
Roger,

In looking over the list (which is usually updated more often than this one is) I find that I have 171 of them. I'm at work, so when I get home I'll detail which ones I don't have and why.

Now as to how many I've read......

RE: Here I Have Lived - A History of Lincoln's Springfield
First, while I don't own every copy of the Lincoln Quarterly, given that everyone has access to it, I consider myself as having it.

Also, Adin Baber's book on Nancy Hanks is ridiculously expensive, so I spent $10 in front of a copy machine at Southern Illinois University-Carbondale instead of buying one.

These are the ones I don't own. My main reason for not buying them is that I am just not interested in them. Looks like I was a bit off in what I thought I had, so that number should be 169.

Bernard, Kenneth A. LINCOLN AND THE MUSIC OF THE CIVIL WAR. Just not interested in it.
Gary, Ralph. FOLLOWING IN LINCOLN'S FOOTSTEPS: A COMPLETE ANNOTATED REFERENCE TO HUNDREDS OF HISTORICAL SITES VISITED BY ABRAHAM LINCOLN. Same reason.
Holzer, Harold, ed. LINCOLN AS I KNEW HIM: GOSSIP, TRIBUTES, AND REVELATIONS FROM HIS BEST FRIENDS AND WORST ENEMIES.
Kerner, Fred, ed. A TREASURY OF LINCOLN QUOTATIONS.
Kushner, Tony. LINCOLN: THE SCREENPLAY.
Mellon, James, ed. THE FACE OF LINCOLN.
Phillips, Isaac Newton, ed.. ABRAHAM LINCOLN BY SOME MEN WHO KNEW HIM.
Wheeler, Tom. MR. LINCOLN'S T-MAILS: THE UNTOLD STORY OF HOW ABRAHAM LINCOLN USED THE TELEGRAPH TO WIN THE CIVIL WAR.

Rob,

Mellon's "The Face of Lincoln" is one of the better books of Lincoln photographs due to the quality of the images, size, etc. If you can find it in a library, have a look. When it came out in 1979, it cost me $75.00! OUCH!

Joe,

This is how bad my filing system is. In looking over my shelves I found that I do have it after all. For some reason my library software didn't register it under the author's proper name. Good thing too. I found some copies on Alibris for as much as $300.

Me thinks we all have way too many books. Lol. "Much study is weariness of the flesh." Read on!
