RE: Springfield Tour
Mentor Graham woukd be an excellent source- but can we trust Herndon? The age-old question.

RE: Springfield Tour
Good question, Bill. Certainly it's possible Herndon put his own "slant" on the interview. I don't know.
I read the part where Graham says, "Lincoln & her both were stayting at My house." At first I thought he meant both Abraham and Ann were staying at his house; to me that doesn't sound right. I wonder if Herndon were writing fast and actually meant to write "studying at my house." |

RE: Springfield Tour
It would have to be- as we know they both were not "staying" there. So much of what we think we know about Lincoln comes from Herndon but one must always weigh matters in light of any bias that may have bern present. Of course, that is true with all records of history.

RE: Springfield Tour
Your questions are one of the reasons I enjoy meeting up with Jo Di Cola at Springfield each year. He is such a refreshing fountain of knowledge.
When we go to some of these sights, the docents usually realize he knows more than they do. It's fun to listen to them talk back and forth. And he does it in such an easy going manner, he's one of the few people who immediately puts you at ease no matter how much or little you know, no matter what your age. It's fun just to watch and listen to him talk with strangers we meet on our trip. So when is this "Old Enough To Know Better" supposed to kick in? |

Awesome! I definitely want to try and make it work for sure. Sounds like it'll be a great time and it'll be nice to meet people who are into Lincoln.

RE: Springfield Tour
Summer is almost here, which means it's time to make plans for fall.
The Springfield Tour this year is from Friday, September 30 thru Sat, October 1. Which really means most of us get there on Thursday, have dinner together, and then walk through the Lincoln neighborhood. My wife likes to get to Springfield early on Thursday and visit the mall (which all the merchants appreciate and also look forward to) Before we all leave, we usually meet for breakfast together Sunday morning, before we say our heartfelt "see you next year". If you've never been before, or it's been several years, I hope you will give serious thought to joining us. (I won't name any names, but if you're reading this, I'm talking about you.) Write the trip of your taxes as a business expense for research work for that book that you may someday write. (It's the thought that counts.) More info to follow. RE: Springfield Tour
Our trip this year will include the Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum, Lincoln's Neighborhood and home, New Salem and local cemetery tours, Oak Ridge Cemetery, the Old State Capitol, and tour around the square.
No trip is complete without a visit to the Prairie Archives Bookstore, dinner at Saputo's (very nice, Italian restaurant) We have time to squeeze in a few other places, I'm hoping we can do the Lincoln Ghost Walk this year. While we may not learn much from it, it should be fun. Maybe the Illinois State Military Museum (where Santa Anna now keeps his wooden leg), the Elijah Isles house - just down the block from Lincoln's home, and Union Station. We are pretty flexible. Check out this online guide to Springfield. http://visit-springfieldillinois.com/Vis...index.html We usually stay at the Abraham Lincoln Motel (Doubletree) downtown, but you can stay wherever you want. They have a nice big lobby where we unwind at the end of the day and get to know each other better. It's convenient, but other places are less expensive. Check around. Joe and I are trying to get a head count of how many will be joining us this year to complete plans for the Tour. The dates are, arrive on September 29 (Thursday evening) and leave October 2 (Sunday) You pay your own expenses, there is no tour fee. If interested please send me an email or private message.
