Take Ross' vote with a grain of salt. The whole thing was rigged ahead of time. There were several votes held in reserve, just nine case Ross did not vote "properly." I do not deny bribery but Ross was in a position to take the money and run or see someone else do it.

Thanks Bill. That's a fascinating event in our history, one that I don't know much about. What little I read a long time ago was not written well and bogged down with legal details that I found very boring.
So when is this "Old Enough To Know Better" supposed to kick in? |

It is a fascinating story into how politics works. I have a new book coming out on the subject (eventually) called Renegade President. It would have been curtains for Johnson (which he deserved) if it had not been for Ben Wade refusing to step aside in favor of Shyler Colfax to be Johnson's successor. It was a matter of keeping the devil you know...
