I came across this image on Twitter this morning. A supporter of Sen. Cruz posted it, I guess to indicate that being "mathematically eliminated" (that is, being unable to get enough pledged delegates to win nomination on the first ballot of the convention) is not necessarily determinative.

No primary elections in Lincoln's day. Main purpose of convention was to choose nominee from several viable candidates.

Getting back to the question posed by the title of this thread: would'nt Lincoln have expected a more dignified election season?

Without a doubt. I really believe that what we are seeing today in the way Trump is running is something that would have embarrassed a man like Lincoln. He was always a gentleman and would have never stood for men talking about women the way Trump does. Lincoln's wife, while not always his greatest adviser, was beloved to him and he would have never shown her or any woman the kind of public or private disrespect that Trump has displayed. Lincoln was not an equal opportunity abuser.

Jean Baker, in her Mary Lincoln biography, wrote:

"Female abolitionists and suffragists gained no respect from her; she believed them unwomanly creatures. She had no interest in obtaining the vote, intending instead to influence her husband."

At the beginning of the Suffragette movement, most women didn't think it was "Ladylike" to openly show support for the movement. Some women didn't believe in it, even though, during the Civil War and even beyond, women held positions of influence and quietly supported not only the right to vote but also to come out from behind the men and have their own voice. Lincoln always supported women and the movement.

I'm not totally sure, but I think Ruth Painter Randal, in her book, Mary Lincoln Biography of a Marriage, mentions Mrs. Lincoln meeting with a group of ladies who were proponents of the Suffragette movement. Mrs. Lincoln did not agree with their views. Unfortunately the book has no footnotes or index. Any one else recall that?
