Gene, these are wonderful. Thank you for posting. I love the one where you are sitting and having coffee with the President. It made me think of the quote, "If this is coffee, please bring me some tea; but if this is tea, please bring me some coffee." This quote is attributed to Lincoln, but my guess is that it is apocryphal.

I LOVE all your photos - thank you so much for sharing, Gene, also for all the detailed descriptions! Especially the New Salem photos make me feel to see it "live" - I can feel the air and atmosphere and smell the wood! It seems fall is the nicest time to go there! And the law office photos make me feel way better about the "condition" and degree of tidyness of my apartment...

The Springfield Tour for 2015 will be Oct 2-3.

Because of the 150th anniversary we have decided to move up our travel dates to Oct 2 & 3rd. (and the hotel is booked solid for the next weekend)

I’ called the Hotel we’ve stayed at before (downtown Abraham Lincoln Motel – Double Tree Inn) just to double check and see if they have anything special going on, or are aware of any special event that might cause the hotel to fill up soon. They told me not yet
The following weekend the hotel is booked up. ON line the rates look a bit higher than last year (I wonder why ?) Downtown is convenient, but you can stay where ever you want. I just made my reservation, for October 1-4, and they are filiing up fast according to the reservation desk at the hotel. http://doubletree3.hilton.com/en/hotels/...index.html

Here is an events calendar. It looks like a Blues and BBQ event going on and a Candle Light Tour at New Salem that weekend – that would be cool! Dates Oct 1- Oct 4. The lady at the hotel said the BBQ event was about a block from the hotel and real good and crowded, but it does not affect the room availability.

We are also planning on visiting the Lincoln Museum in Lincoln, IL.
Looks like a full trip if we can visit New Salem one evening and go to Lincoln, IL on Fri or Sat. and book stores too.

If you are even thinking about coming, please book a room now. If something comes up and you can't make it, you can always cancel. I wouldn't be surprised if you wait till next month the motel will be full.

It's been nice to read about and see the photo's of all the events in the DC area.

This fall, October 2-3, a Friday and Saturday, come to Springfield, IL and walk where Lincoln walked. There is something special about strolling in the early evening down the street where he lived. You can almost hear the children playing, the dogs barking, the coolness of the evening air, it can almost take you back over a 150 years ago. As the lights go on in his house as the sunlight fades to night, you feel like you could walk up to his front door and knock, and be greeted by Abraham, Mary, the kids and Fido.

This year, we plan on taking the candle light tour of New Salem, the small village where Lincoln lived when he was in his early 20's. Here he made life long friends, studied law, went into debt, and maybe fell in love. It was a time that helped to shape his character. Another, almost magical place. It's not hard to imagine what his life might have been like here. His spirit lives on in these two special places.

I hope you will take advantage of the opportunity to come and visit with us this fall.

Now that summer is here and it's hot and humid, it's time to think ahead to the cool relaxing temperatures of fall and the Springfield Tour. This coming Oct 2 and 3rd, it's time to make your plans to join us and see the sights of Lincoln Land with an informal group of "friends from the forum".

Nestled in the rolling flat lands of central Illinois, Springfield and the surrounding area is a delightful place to visit in October. Operators are anxiously awaiting your call to make motel reservations for you. I like to leave early the day before, to take a leisurely drive down the back roads through small towns with their quaint antique and main street stores, family owned restaurants, and enjoying the pleasant country side, the heart of America. My wife wants us to hurry up and get there so she can shop at the mall.

Less than 3 months till the Springfield Tour 2015.
It's not to late to plan on coming.

This year we plan on spending some time in the town of Lincoln, IL (only a few miles north of Springfield) home to the Lincoln Heritage Museum, which we will be visiting Friday morning, October 2. http://museum.lincolncollege.edu/

Following our visit in the morning the Lincoln Coloquium is also touring the museum in the afternoon. (We're there in the morning to help the museum guides learn from Joe and Bill so they will be better prepared for tlhe folks in the afternoon)

After a delitefull taste of the local cuisine from a nearby eating establishment, it's of to the local farm store to buy some watermellon seeds from the Lincoln Christening that took place here in 1853.

But that's not all, there's much more to come.....

One of the things I'm looking forward to on this visit that I've mentioned is the Lincoln Museum in Lincoln IL. But that's not all. If you like Americana art, there are at least 4, four, Lincoln Murals (and several others around town - the Fallstaff Beer mural- among others) and a couple of Lincoln statues in this town that we are going to try and visit.

Then there's the Rail Splitter Covered Wagon, the phone booth on top of city hall, the city of Lincoln Christening Site, the big ball of twine, and The Rustic Inn - where a gang of counterfeiters met in 1876 to plan stealing Lincoln's body. I've never seen any of these, so I'm excited!
And that's just the first day.

But best of all, it's spending time with friends who share a love of history and of Abraham Lincoln. It's this October 2 & 3 (Friday & Saturday) To find out more read a few of the previous posts, and/or just send me a private message.

One of the highlights for me each year is visiting New Salem. This year we will plan to take the candle light tour.

If you're coming, we want you to be prepared. They say Abraham Lincoln's ghost walks at midnight. Fortunately the tour ends at 9PM.

I think it's really because he had to many corn dogs and onion rings at his late night stops at the Cozy Dog Drive Inn. That would have me walking at midnight.
Who knows, but I'm willing to give it a try
