Actually, this "funny looking lid" as Joe calls it, is a normal bonnet. For some reason photographers would turn the bonnet so that the back was on top of the woman's head. Personally, I think this may have been done to show the decoration on the back of the bonnet. Otherwise, it would never be visible in photos.
