I personally think that Powell would have probably benefited from one of these as opposed to the "false moustach" idea.... also looks a tad bit better than a darn undershirt sleeve on one's head as well as more than likely much warmer to boot!

He should have utilised that stick on tash... I mean, it would have made him so much less conspicuous... NOT!!!
He was a trend setter. Might have taken 140 odd years, but the cut off under crackers hat is now de rigueur as a fashion statement.
