Who is the soldier front right scratching the dog?

Would the soldier be George Custer?

Absolutely correct - old blondie himself. Very good.

RE: Extra Credit Questions
When the Lincolns moved out of the Globe Tavern they rented a small home on Fourth Street. They were there from fall of 1843 to spring of 1844. At that time they moved into their home at 8th and Jackson.

What is the name of the man who owned this small home that the Lincolns rented for a short time?

RE: Extra Credit Questions
That is correct, Eva. The rent was $100 per year. There was a time in history when the small home's owner was more legend than fact, but the discovery of some old Springfield property records proved that the legend was indeed fact. I think this is one of the harder questions I have ever posted.

Hint# 1: I do not know of any books that have the answer, but the answer is on the Internet (as well as in a recent Lincoln publication).

RE: Extra Credit Questions
Was his last name "Dresser"? I can't remember the first name...

RE: Extra Credit Questions
Excellent guess, Toia, but it's not Dresser. (Dresser's first name was Charles - the Lincolns purchased their 8th and Jackson home from him)

RE: Extra Credit Questions
(...and Dresser had performed the Lincolns' wedding ceremony!)
I cannot find the answer but found this nice colored drawing:

RE: Extra Credit Questions
Nice find, Eva, and we have a winner --> Gene and Joy! Kudos, Gene and Joy! Great job, Joy!!

The source I used is an article by Mary C. Kerr in the Spring 2013 Lincoln Herald. The Herald article includes the the image Eva found but in black and white.

The answer is also on the Internet. One place is here. Another place is here.

Joy and Gene, you win a free virtual week in the Lincoln cottage on Fourth Street.

RE: Extra Credit Questions
Nice job Gene and Joy! This one seemed pretty obscure.

Roger, is Ms. Kerr's article available online?

RE: Extra Credit Questions
Scott, I really do not know. Many years ago Ed Steers maintained a nice Lincoln Herald website, but I am not sure what is the case nowadays. I know that Ed no longer operates a Lincoln Herald site, but I don't know if anything took its place. I think the ALPLM has a Lincoln Herald Archive, but I do not think all editions are available for download.
