Reveille in Washington
Just finished this book, and it is pretty much what everyone says it is.
A great history of Washington DC during the Civil War. Written over 70 years ago, it is still relevant, still pretty much historically accurate. I especially enjoyed the chapter about Mary Lincoln. It is a long book, (500+ pages) so don't get one with small print, otherwise you may feel like you will never finish reading it. I think it' worth the extra money to get it in hardcover. There are several good reviews on line, but I think this is one of the better one's. http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/con...02409.html So when is this "Old Enough To Know Better" supposed to kick in? |

I wish someone would invent a pill that once taken would make you think you were reading a favorite book again for the first time.
Reveille would be such a book. Tom |

RE: Reveille in Washington
I think the fact that it was published when Washington was in the midst of WWII gave a unique perspective to its original audience.

It showed both sides of her personality, explained why she may have acted the way she did, but didn't make excuses for her.
So when is this "Old Enough To Know Better" supposed to kick in? |

RE: Reveille in Washington
I read Margaret Leech's book years ago and only recently re-read it. I agree with all of you, as old as the book is it provides wonderful insights into life in the capital during the Civil War in addition to insights into personalities such as MTL.
