I think we had The Silent Witness as an article in the Surratt Courier years ago. And thanks for the parenting tip. Since we have numerous Yankees coming to the conference next month, I'll hire some Sons of Confederate Veterans to guard Surratt House for three days.

I think stories like that are amazing. Just like the woman who donated Mary Lincoln's cane chair back to Ford's Theater, these folks have unselfishly returned items that they could have sold for thousands of dollars so that we can all enjoy them. That's nice.

RE: Trivial Trivia - taking trivia to new levels
This is really trivial, but I will post it and see if anyone tries to find it.
One time an ox recently purchased by Thomas Lincoln broke out and wandered off. Thomas sent Abraham to bring the ox back. Abraham found the ox and decided to try to ride it home. After a lot of kicking and coaxing and attempts to throw him, Abraham determinedly rode the ox back home. What was the ox's name? |

Don't remember the name of the ox. It is an amazing story as I recall. Young Lincoln had no halter or anything else to try and control the animal. He only had his hat-which he would use to steer the ox by slapping him on the left or right side of the head of the ox.

It must be Buck.

Kudos, Joe. The ox was named Buck. I have one book that says Abe had a crush on William Wood's daughter, Elizabeth. Abe apparently was trying to impress Elizabeth when he leaped onto Buck's back. Elizabeth laughed as Abe tried to control the ox.

RE: Trivial Trivia - taking trivia to new levels
This trivia question is for our graveyard sleuths (Rich, Jim, and Dave that I know of). Many of us have seen the clip from the old TV show, I've Got A Secret, featuring the last person to have been present at the Lincoln assassination.
That person died shortly after the show. His name was Samuel Seymour. Where is Mr. Seymour buried? |

Very good, Joe. You get an A+ for the day - just for beating my gravestone gurus to the answer!
BTW: Mr. Seymour is in an unmarked grave -- and no, the Surratt Society has no plans to provide one. There are several requests in ahead of his! |
