What will you read in 2013?

Just curious as to your reading plans for 2013. I haven't made a firm decision on what Lincoln-related material I will read, but I do plan to start Robert Caro's multi-volume biography of Lyndon Johnson. I also would like to read an upcoming biography of Dumas Malone, biographer of Thomas Jefferson, which is due out at the end of this month.

Lincoln-related possibilities are forum member Mike Burkhimer's book on Lincoln's religion as well as Freedom National by James Oakes, a new work on slavery. It's been a long time since I read any of James G. Randall's books, so I'm thinking about his four-volume Lincoln the President. Of course, much of the year will be devoted to Tarbell, but I'm bound and determined to go over and above that.

Hello Rob, One book that I am going to read this year I just purchased this past weekend is Dumas Malone's biography on Thomas Jefferson. Jefferson is another one of my favorite people in history. I am now reading the book I talked about earlier which is Dr. John Lattimer's Kennedy and Lincoln. What a great book! Lattimer and his sons did out standing investigative work on both Lincoln and Kennedy assassinations. Lastly after joining this forum and reading all the treads you folks have posted I Feel weak in my knowlege of Lincoln. So I will be doing alot more reading on our dear president Lincoln. Gary P.

Rob, Well now I have another book I will read. Long Journey with Mr. Jefferson is now being ordered. Thank you for the lead on this book. I am sure that I will learn alot about Mr. Jefferson I never knew along with a lot of good reading. Gary P.

I am up to p 179 of a over 1200 page edition of "Les Miserables." Great book so far. I have delayed but plan to resume my search for a complete and inexpensive edition of Sandburg's War Years.

I'm going to read Sandburg's "Lincoln; The Prairie Years and the War Years"

and more of my recent thrift store finds:

'Founding Brothers' by Joseph Ellis;

'Undaunted Courage' by Stephen Ambrose (about Lewis and Clark - my husband is related to Meriwether Lewis so I'm really looking forward to that one)

And maybe I'll read 'Mary Chestnut's Civil War.'

Anybody have any thoughts about any of these? I LOVE thrift store book sections

Good idea, Herb, I've been wanting to get Betty's book, too. Oh, and I really really want to read 'The Free State of Jones' by Victoria Bynum. Another family connection - my husband's gg grandmother's sister married one of the brothers of one of the men killed in Newt Knight's Company of Mississippi men, former confederate soldiers who had enough of the 'rich man's war, poor man's battle' who waged a guerrilla war against confederate troops in Jones Mississippi.

It's called Alias “Paine” - Lewis Thornton Powell, the Mystery Man of the Lincoln Conspiracy, and I bet the Surratt House carries it. It's a must read - one of the best!
