RE: Happy Father's Day! - brtmchl - 06-15-2013 12:09 PM Love the quote Gene. Thank you for the posted picture Betty. Happy Father's day to all. WALK A LITTLE SLOWER By Anonymous Walk a little slower daddy," said a child so small, "I'm following in your footsteps and I don't want to fall; Sometimes your steps are very fast, sometimes they are hard to see, So walk a little slower, Daddy, for you are leading me; Someday when I'm all grown up, you're all I want to be, then I will have a little child, who'll want to follow me; And I would want to lead just right, and know that I was true; So walk a little slower, Daddy, for I must follow you." RE: Happy Father's Day! - RJNorton - 06-21-2015 05:05 AM Happy Father's Day to all the dads out there! RE: Happy Father's Day! - LincolnMan - 06-21-2015 05:17 AM Yes, happy Father's Day! RE: Happy Father's Day! - HerbS - 06-21-2015 06:24 AM HAPPY FATHER'S DAY-EVERYONE! RE: Happy Father's Day! - Eva Elisabeth - 06-21-2015 08:16 AM Happy Father's Day. Honor your dad as long as he's with you. I was a Daddy's girl, and he was the one who told me he loved me better than anything else in the world. (Sadly I wasn't given the chance to pass this love on to children of my own.) Maybe someone else, too, can relate to this: Still Missing You After All These Years I was only eight years old When mom told me that you died. I didn't fully know what it meant. I felt numb, but I still cried. I didn't know how big a hole your passing would leave. I didn't understand how much loneliness I was about to receive. As the years have gone by, I've forgotten a few things, Like the sound of your voice, And how your laughter used to ring. There have been thousands of times When I've wished you were still here, To celebrate all of my joys, And help me calm my fear. RE: Happy Father's Day! - L Verge - 06-21-2015 08:56 AM Eva, Thank you for this tribute. I was lucky enough to have my father with me until I was in my mid-30s - and also to have given him the granddaughter that he desperately wanted (not a grandson that might have to go to war - his thoughts, not mine). He thoroughly enjoyed her until he passed away when she was six. My dad was not perfect. He was a functioning alcoholic during most of my teenage years on, but he was not abusive and always saw to the support of his family. Above all else, even at his worst, he was supportive of my education and my feelings. Because of his alcoholism and his being a chain smoker (like many men of his time), I lost him to throat cancer in 1979 - just five days before Christmas. It was a horrible death, and as much as I loved him, I ended up praying for God to take him at the end so that he could find relief. My marriage ended two years later - five days after Christmas this time. How I wish I had still had my dad to help me raise my daughter. My mother did a fantastic job of helping, so I know that the two of them would have been the dynamic duo. We read about so many fathers deserting their families today, being abusive, etc., and I saw quite a few dysfunctional fathers during my teaching career. I know we all have our memories of our fathers, and I hope that most of them are good ones. In case we have any teenagers and young adults reading this forum, I urge you to develop and maintain a good relationship with your fathers. It is so important to your future. RE: Happy Father's Day! - BettyO - 06-21-2015 02:01 PM Quote:Happy Father's Day. This brought a lump to my throat, Eva - beautiful!! My beloved Dad died of a massive heart attack on a morning when I left to go up to Surratt House for a dedication of what is now the "Wok and Roll" Restaurant in DC (Old Boarding House.) He seemed fine at breakfast that morning. By 8 PM when I returned home that evening, he was dead - having dropped dead in the hallway after coming home from church at 2 PM. Dad gave me my love of history - he was a wonderful man, smart, funny and I was "his girl"..... RE: Happy Father's Day! - HerbS - 06-21-2015 05:56 PM My dad was a beast! He beat my mother and I to a pulp! Thus,I vowed that I would never treat any one that way! RE: Happy Father's Day! - LincolnToddFan - 06-21-2015 08:35 PM HerbS, I am so sorry(hugs) My father was strict with us growing up and I resented it. But now that I am an adult and he has been long gone, I would give anything to be able to hug him tight and thank him. Eva, I adored my father even though I was a little intimidated by him. I agree with Betty and Laurie and the others, that amazing poem has me nearly in tears. Thank you for sharing it! HAPPY FATHERS DAY to all the guys! RE: Happy Father's Day! - Eva Elisabeth - 06-22-2015 06:37 AM Herb, I, too am sorry. I had the most wonderful dad.
