It is newspaperman and war correspondent GATH

RE: Assassination Trivia - BettyO - 05-05-2013 05:22 PM

You got it, Wild Bill! Your prize is to ride Orb in the Preakness!

RE: Assassination Trivia - L Verge - 05-05-2013 05:52 PM

How many of you know that GATH bought property in the mountains of Maryland after the war and built an estate named Gathland? On that estate, he built a large memorial arch to war correspondents. The arch and land and now part of the Maryland State Parks system.

Bill, from my unfortunate experience, please take Betty's advice. Do not think like John Velazquez - ride Orb and not Verrazano.

I went to Gathland State Park today. Here are a few images of the War Correspondents' Arch:

Lovely place, and well worth a visit. I would recommend a cool day when the gnats are not out, though. (You can see Dudley and I sneaked into a picture.)

Wonderful photos, Susan. Thank you for sharing!

RE: Assassination Trivia - Gene C - 10-31-2016 09:08 AM

I have never seen that before, that's impressive.

RE: Assassination Trivia - L Verge - 10-31-2016 10:48 AM

We had hoped to include that in a Sunday trip for the 2017 Surratt Conference, but we had to change things around. Maybe next year. I think Bob Allen did a great article on George Alfred Townshend for the Courier a year or so ago.

What is the name of this ship?

I cannot off the top of my head come up with a name, but the skyline looks London to me. Did J. Benjamin board this ship?

HMS Warrior?

RE: Assassination Trivia - RJNorton - 11-14-2016 12:19 PM

Eva and Blaine, those are excellent guesses by both of you folks, but neither one is correct.

RE: Assassination Trivia - Thomas Kearney - 11-14-2016 01:14 PM

River Queen? Wild guess

Drives me nuts to brooding about that background. What I thought St. Paul's - could it be the Capitol, hence DC? Or NYC, regarding the skyscrapers?
