I'll let Lindsey give you the juicy details, but I'll just say, "Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned."

Gene-- I don't know any more than what is in a chapter on Mary S. in "American Trials." I have to give tours tomorrow but if I have a spare moment (unlikely as I am a slave to all of those wonderful trinkets and pieces of furniture that make up our lovely museum) I will give you the cliff-notes.

Laurie--that is one of my favorite quotes >=)

I've read a little on line, but the articles were focused on her insanity defense from the legal point of view. As I understand it, she shot a former boy friend point blank and killed him. They had known each other for about four years. How serious their relationship is questionable, but she thought it was more serious than he did. Part of her defense was that she had major female irregularities that caused periodic mental instability. Add to that she was a jilted lover and you have a perfect recipe for murder. She supposedly had a small stack of corespondence from the man in question (love letters), but I couldn't tell if any of them were read to the jury. His family claimed no knowledge of a serious relationship between the two, as he had even married someone else (for money?). This was a sensational trial that created quite a following, even Mrs. Lincoln followed the trial in the newspapers. The all male jury was out for a very short time and gave a verdict of not guilty. An interesting ending, several years later (15-20?) she marries one of the attorneys (hers?) He was 8o, she was 40. This was one of the early trials involving the insanity defense.

Please correct me if I have some of the basics wrong and feel free to fill in the details.

So I'm confused but also tired-are we saying that probably both Davey and Lew were with Booth to hear him say that "run him through" quote?

That is just something I thought I read somewhere but have no proof for. But as always with this type of thing--it might not be true but makes for a good story!

And there's so much of that when it comes to anything Lincoln!
