I know that Lincoln supported colonization most of his life, but was he an actual member of the American Colonization Society? thank you.

Mike, I have a book by Gerald Prokopowicz that says Lincoln was a member of the Illinois State Colonization Society but not the American Colonization Society.

I have never studied the American Colonization Society in depth, but I have always had the feeling that they operated more on a state-by-state basis than a large national movement. I know they were popular in Maryland for awhile. There was actually a Slaveholders' Convention in Baltimore in the 1850s where colonization was proposed as one of the alternatives. I have tried to find out details on this convention because some of the names were Prince George's County leaders.
