I looked this up and found this explanation of the purpose of the buddy list.
1. Being able to quickly contact certain users and seeing if they're online or not.
2. Being able to quickly select users when sending PMs.
Personally, I will not be using it, but I don't care what other folks do with it. There is no setting in my control panel where I can either "enable" the feature or "disable" the feature. It just comes with the program.
