Edwin M. Stanton represented Sickles and it was one of the first times an insanity defense was used.
He killed Philip Barton Key, son of Francis Scott Key of Star Bangled Banner fame, whom he found out was having an affair with his wife.

I forgot to say that I enjoyed your typo on "Star Bangled Banner." Sometimes, when I hear the horrible renditions of our national anthem that we have to endure with some of the popular singers of the day, I'm inclined to rename it the "Star Mangled Banner."

Another son was killed in a duel, but I have no idea on an assassination connection.

You are correct Roger. The son was named Daniel Ross Key, and the duel took place behind an establishment known as Good Hope Tavern. Those familiar with the Booth escape route know that Booth and Herold crossed over the Navy Yard Bridge into what is now Anacostia (then known as Uniontown), hung a left onto Good Hope Road (then known as Harrison Street), and climbed a long hill. At the top of that hill was where Good Hope Tavern sat. There's a chicken joint there now.
