RE: Donation to? - AussieMick - 08-13-2025 05:42 PM No, Roger ... Queen Victoria also made a donation. RE: Donation to? - Rogerm - 08-13-2025 05:58 PM Was this a donation to feed the Irish during the famine in Ireland? RE: Donation to? - AussieMick - 08-13-2025 08:34 PM Congratulations , Rogerm! Yes, the Irish Famine (also known as the Great Hunger) https://web.archive.org/web/20241003191826/https://www.irishcentral.com/roots/history/abraham-lincoln-ireland-great-famine https://web.archive.org/web/20241002203423/https://www.irishcentral.com/roots/history/choctaw-indians-money-irish-famine-relief The amount that Queen Victoria donated is not certain. In fact it is said that initially she was going to make it £1,000 to the British Relief Association but the British Relief Association's secretary considered it insufficient and communicated this to the Queen. In response, she increased her donation to £2,000. Apparently, there is documentation that the Sultan of Turkey, who was himself a very young man at the time, offered to give £10,000 but in Constantinople, the British embassy went to his people to say that it would offend royal protocol so he reduced his donation. https://www.irishcentral.com/roots/history/queen-victoria-irish-famine RE: Donation to? - Gene C - 08-14-2025 06:38 AM This reminds me of a song - Skibbereen https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wAk_q5EUvgg&list=RDwAk_q5EUvgg&start_radio=1 RE: Donation to? - David Lockmiller - 08-14-2025 10:55 AM (08-14-2025 06:38 AM)Gene C Wrote: This reminds me of a song - Skibbereen The times may be here, now. |
