trivia - mbgross - 07-08-2025 06:07 PM How many people lived in the Lincoln home as renters, custodians, etc. after 1861? Good luck! RE: trivia - J. Beckert - 07-08-2025 08:11 PM That's a sum of 26 years. Hmmmmnn.... I'm going to throw 25 against the wall and see if it sticks. RE: trivia - mbgross - 07-08-2025 08:38 PM Good attempt. But sorry the number is less than 25. RE: trivia - RJNorton - 07-09-2025 04:21 AM 16? RE: trivia - mbgross - 07-09-2025 07:12 AM Another good answer, but it is less than 16. RE: trivia - STS Lincolnite - 07-09-2025 03:31 PM Hmm. I’m surprised there are less than 16. I know the first renter was Lucian Tilton. He had a wife and at I think least 2 kids. So there is 4 who lived there. The next renter was George Harlow. He too had a wife and I think 2 kids. So that makes 8 who lived there. Osborn Oldroyd of course lived in the house but I’m not sure if he was married yet or not. So that brings the total to about 9. Lincoln had a nephew (one of the Edwards family) that lived in the house as did his wife and daughter (and maybe her husband). There may have been others in those families too. So that would seem to be 13 or 14 that lived in the house. I also know there were probably 5 or 6 more renters/caretakers who lived there through the years. I don’t remember them by name or if they had families. That already seems like more than 16. Maybe I am getting confused on what you are asking. How many who “lived there” vs. how many were the specific renters/caretakers of the place. RE: trivia - mbgross - 07-09-2025 04:26 PM Sorry for the confusion. I was counting head of household. I count 8. Source: https://sangamoncountyhistory.org/wp/the-lincoln-home-after-the-lincolns-1861-1953/ |
