Happy Birthday, Dr. Wayne C.Temple - Thomas Lapsley - 02-06-2025 09:43 PM

On February 5, Dr. Wayne C Temple turned 101 years "young", making him the oldest Lincoln scholar. Of the all Lincoln books he has written, which is your favorite?

For me it would be Abraham Lincoln: From Skeptic to Prophet.

Happy Birthday, Dr. Temple!

Happy Birthday, Dr. Temple!

I did a little research for him for that book. Sent to him a photostat of the obituaries of Simeon Francis and his wife. Also I sent to photo of Mr. Francis grave at Portland's (OR) Riverview Cemetery. In 2011, I sent to Dr. Temple a print of a rare cdv photograph of Francis in which he included in the third edition of the book.

Thomas, thank you for your thread on Dr. Temple's birthday and his books! My favorite is also Abraham Lincoln: From Skeptic to Profit. I don't have the third edition. Would love to see that rare Eliza Francis image. Great find.

Here are two new books written by Alan E. Hunter with official launch date this month, Thursdays with Doc. Dr. Wayne C. Temple’s Recollections of Springfield & Lincoln and Osborn H. Oldroyd: Keeper of the Lincoln Flame. Dave Taylor has a video interview with Hunter discussing both books here. https://alanehunter.com/tag/wayne-c-temple/

I first met Doc when I presented a paper at a Conference on Illinois History about Carl Sandburg and James Randall. Doc had provided me with some documents and other references about the pair. I never got over the feeling that he was somewhat disappointed in my presentation since I didn't go much (if any) into Randall's teaching ability. I didn't because a professor at Eastern Illinois University who studied under Randall told me that often times Randall's notes were so jumbled from his throwing them on his desk after class that he didn't know where to pick up during the next class.

i have honestly never read any of Doc's books, but that puts him in pretty good company. Of all my Lincoln books I have probably read less than a quarter of them. Maybe one day!

Best
