Previously Unknown Unpublished Letter of Abraham Lincoln - Anita - 07-31-2023 04:38 PM July 10, 2023 America’s Most Prominent Publications, the Wall Street Journal and the New York Times, Covered Raab’s Discovery of an Important and Unpublished Letter of Abraham Lincoln The announcement last week that The Raab Collection was offering an unpublished, previously unknown letter of President Abraham Lincoln was met with great interest from media all over the world. The Wall Street Journal reported on the sale, for $85,000, of this remarkable historical document, both in print and online. Dated Aug. 19, 1861, the short letter is addressed to Charles Ellet Jr., an American civil engineer and Union Army colonel, who had met the president and lobbied him for the creation of a civil engineering corps. Colonel Ellet had insisted that immediate action be taken to understand the South’s infrastructure because he felt that Washington was vulnerable. “So here we see Lincoln taking on an effort to document the Southern infrastructure and to exploit that information to benefit the Union and protect Washington,” Mr. Raab said on Wednesday."
