Surratt Society Meeting and "Conference" 2022 - wpbinzel - 04-12-2022 11:29 AM

The 2022 Annual Surratt Society Meeting and Conference will be held virtually on Saturday, April 23, 2022, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. ET. After a brief business meeting, our program will be John Wilkes Booth, the Makings of an Assassin, presented by Dave Taylor. Dave's presentation will examine Booth's early life and point out some of the key events that shaped his mind and eventually put him on the path to Ford's Theatre.

The meeting and presentation are open to all (i.e., you need not be a member of the Surratt Society); however, you will need to register in advance at https://www.surrattmuseum.org/ .

I signed up. It looks like a very interesting talk. Taylor's knowledge of Booth's family is second to none.

My Surratt Society membership was due to expire at the end of last year and I never received anything in the mail about renewing it. I'm assuming it expired. Are there any updates on what's happening with the Society?

The Surratt Society is alive and well, albeit very different than it was. During Laurie Verge's tenure as the Director of the Surratt House Museum, there was a very close relationship between the Museum (owned and operated by the Maryland-National Capital Parks and Planning Commission) and the Surratt Society, which provided the volunteer docents to conduct the tours of the Historic House. In return, the Commission undertook the cost of printing and mailing The Surratt Courier to Surratt Society members on a monthly basis, of which Laurie was the editor. After Laurie's death, the Commission, citing COVID, was no longer willing to print and mail the Courier, and the Museum was closed. Because the benefits of membership in the Surratt Society was the Courier and free admission to the Museum, the Executive Committee of the Surratt Society voted to suspend dues for annual year members.

Louise Oertly, the president of the Surratt Society, has very ably taken on the task of compiling and editing the Courier, which is now produced on a bimonthly basis and is available to all at the Surratt Society website, http://www.surrattmuseum.org . Donations are of course welcome, but we, the Executive Committee of the Surratt Society, have not yet re-imposed annual dues. The relationship between the Surratt Society and the new Director of the Surratt House Museum and the Commission remains to be determined, but the Executive Committee of the Surratt Society is committed to continuing an organization to honor Laurie Verge's legacy.

I really enjoyed the meeting and Dave Taylor's presentation. I'd like to thank Dave for answering my question. Terry Alford's book Fortune's Fool is an excellent resource.

Same here - I enjoyed it very much! And I loved the pictures. Also I just checked out the link to Tom Bogar's audio recording and loved it - I think it would be worth to be shared here, but I don't know if I am authorized to do so.

I really enjoyed Dave's presentation as well! A Dave Taylor talk on Booth and/or the assassination is always good.

I also want to congratulate Dave and Jennifer and give them my fondest wishes on his upcoming wedding next Saturday!

I have no objection, Eva. Here is the link:

Tom, I just saw the link above from your 2013 presentation. It was great and very informative talk as well!

Yes, this was a great talk. I encourage anyone interested in the goings on at Ford's Theatre around the time of the assassination to listen to this talk (and of course read Tom's book!). I got to see this talk in person that day and hobnob with the speaker. Hard to believe it’s been almost 9 years ago!!

And, that guy who asked the last question looks really familiar. Wink
