I'm going to second Roger and also say it was Turnham.

That's it. It is David Turnham. He gave Lincoln a copy of the Revised Laws of Indiana which included a copy of the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution. According to Ida Tarbell, it was the first time Lincoln had access to the documents and it began his political education. Coincidentally, I have a friend who attended David Turnham elementary in Dale, Ind.

I am kicking myself for not getting this much earlier. I actually have a book (There I Grew Up by William Bartelt) that contains this exact picture, but I just forgot about looking in that source. Bartelt's book is a good source of information on Lincoln's Indiana years.

Roger,

I actually got the picture from an Images of America series book called Indiana's Lincolnland. I have Bartelt's book, but I had no idea the picture was in there as well. As far as I know it's the only known picture of Turnham.

Edwin Stanton?

RE: Who is this? - RJNorton - 02-22-2020 05:56 PM

I see the similarity, Émilie, but it's not Stanton. The correct answer is not as well known as Stanton, but he has been mentioned previously on this forum.

Hint #1: Mary Lincoln knew this man; Abraham Lincoln did not.

Dr. Richard Peterson of Bellevue Place

RE: Who is this? - AussieMick - 02-22-2020 09:16 PM

William Mumler?

RE: Who is this? - RJNorton - 02-23-2020 05:51 AM

Close enough, Gene! It is Dr. Richard J. Patterson of Bellevue Place in Batavia, Illinois. Mary was sent to Bellevue after her insanity trial in 1875. Mary was there from May 20th to September 11th of that year.

It reminds me of Ely Parker, Grant's Native American aide.

Well done, Rob. You nailed it on the first try.

(Thanks to AussieMick for first posting a trivia question about him.)
