I havent got it now (borrowed from the public library) but Ron Chernow's "Washington: A Life", from memory, described much the same events (but in less detail) and suggested that young Washington had made an error with others eager to place all the blame on him. It struck me as surprising that he managed to not only re-claim his reputation but also to put the whole debacle, where he was almost killed, behind him.
