Mary's European Travels - Susan Higginbotham - 04-16-2019 08:29 AM I have been skimming "Mary Lincoln for the Ages," Jason Emerson's analytical bibliography concerning Mary Lincoln, in which he notes the lack of a detailed account of Mary's travels in Europe. I felt that particularly yesterday when I was wondering whether she visited Notre Dame. One of the Lincoln sites I follow on Facebook stated that there is no account of her having done so, although it seems unlikely she would have missed the opportunity. Is anyone here aware of a European itinerary for Mary? I checked her letters, and I cannot find a specific mention of visiting there, but it seems likely to me. On August 21, 1869, she wrote the following in a letter to Eliza Slataper: "We went to London via Paris, remaining at the latter place only 5 days, but sight seeing every moment of our time." RE: Mary's European Travels - LincolnMan - 04-16-2019 02:07 PM I can’t imagine that she didn’t go there. RE: Mary's European Travels - Eva Elisabeth - 04-17-2019 04:42 PM It seems unlikely to me not to sightsee it within five days. This gives an idea of Paris in those days: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paris_during_the_Second_Empire RE: Mary's European Travels - Mylye2222 - 11-22-2019 05:50 PM Also Mary settled for four years in the Pyrenees region city of Pau. She also went for a spa cure in Vichy, Central France, which happen to locate an hour away from my hometown of Saint-Étienne. RE: Mary's European Travels - Susan Higginbotham - 11-02-2023 07:50 PM In doing some research, I unexpectedly stumbled across an account by a dentist who claimed to have escorted Mary and Tad out of Frankfurt. I wrote it up on my blog: https://www.susanhigginbotham.com/posts/an-unlikely-escort-the-dentist-who-maybe-helped-mary-lincoln-out-of-frankfurt/#_ednref5 RE: Mary's European Travels - Gene C - 11-03-2023 07:20 AM I wasn't familiar with your blog and I'm glad you posted a link to it. Enjoyed your Photos of the Past Reading about Nora Fitzpatrick, poor lady had a lot of sadness in her life. I look forward to reading more.
