Abraham Lincoln's Birthday - RJNorton - 02-12-2018 02:43 PM

In honor of Lincoln's Birthday, Joe Di Cola sent the following:

"Years ago on Lincoln's birthday, the Chicago Tribune front page would usually have a Joseph Parrish cartoon honoring Lincoln. This practice seems to have ended sometime around or just after the celebration of the birth sesquicentennial--an event so well-celebrated that I have an entire bookshelf of books, pamphlets, etc. from that event. This was a marked contrast to the almost non-event of the birth bicentennial, with the exception of the publications of Michael Burlingame's definitive biography. Today is Lincoln's birthday and hardly any notice is given. I thought you would like to see a few of the images in my collection of the Tribune front page from the mid-1950s."

Thank you, Joe! You are absolutely correct - Vicki and I watched the morning news, and there was no mention at all that today is Lincoln's Birthday.

Happy Birthday, Mr. President Abraham Lincoln!

Thank you very much for the inspiration that you have given to me in my life to do the right thing, as given the wisdom to see the right thing to do.

Happy belated Birthday to Mr. Lincoln!
Roger and Jo - please know that while it is sad and frustrating that no mention was made on the news, the spirit (and the parties) is alive and well!

I wasn't able to join the celebration in Springfield or Washington this year but two good friends who attended made sure, through social media, that we did not miss a thing and reported dutifully and in detail about the events until late at night!
Many more people got to enjoy it!

Also - and this, too, happens on facebook and twitter (hate it or love it...) - I can report that the world wide cake battle in honor of Lincoln's birthday was won by Canada this year.
Forum member Mary-Margret has OUTDONE herself with a gorgeous and colorful - and supposedly YUMMY - treat that made the German contender look a little weak and conservative (I'm already heating up the oven for next year!)

Denmark threw in a somewhat lazy movie marathon and French fans held a contest to memorize and present the Gettysburg Adress (without an accent).

I am aware - this is in NO way what you feel is missing and I agree. But there is still...something.

Angela,
Your cake looks delicious.
Fido and I celebrated with gingerbread.

Angela, both cakes look way better than any I could produce (including the presentation).
I celebrated with a Lincoln lunch, does that count, too? Apples, grapes...

The Culver's near campus had a $5 fill up special of a butter burger with cheese, fries, and a soda Monday

Thank you, Roger, for leading the celebration of Lincoln's birthday as always.

Great cakes - both.

Thank you all for the kind comments on my cake - I DO take pride in cutting out that stencil and it was flawless this year ;-) - but Canada DID post the recipe and she had LAYERS of various flavors...and that SHIRT! Overall win totally deserved!
@Eva and Gene - apples, grapes and gingerbread will get you many points for authenticity! But don't be fooled - the "likes-jury" is rigorous
;-)
While it is a bit more light-hearted in this time and age, I had made it a tradition to pay for a round of drinks on this day at my favorite bar (closed last year, still looking) and quite a few guests asked about whose birthday it was. Great way to squeeze in a little lecture.
