Abolition? Vegetarian? I am going to guess either Bronson or Louisa May Alcott.

Scratch Dr. Busey - I just realized that this person boarded at Sprigg's before Lincoln. Sylvester Graham of graham bread, vegetarian, temperance fame?

Theodore D. Weld?

(Poor man! No coffee...I don't drink alcohol or smoke and I'm used to a certain degree of self-discipline due to 20 years of ballett schooling, but NO COFFEE - unimaginable!)

Kudos, Eva! That is correct. Theodore Weld, the abolitionist leader, had stayed at Mrs. Sprigg's in the early 1840's, and the quotes come from letters he wrote to his wife.

I may stand corrected on this, but I believe most of the boarders at Mrs. Sprigg's left their families back home. I think Lincoln was unusual in that Mary, Robert, and little Eddie were also boarding there with Abraham. I think the vast majority of Mrs. Sprigg's boarders did not have their families with them.

Which institutions of higher learning issued honorary degrees to Lincoln?

RE: Extra Credit Questions - RJNorton - 05-20-2013 08:11 AM

Bill, I do not know if this is complete, but here are some:

Knox College conferred on Abraham Lincoln an honorary degree of Doctor of Laws on July 3, 1860. Columbia University followed with a similar degree on June 26, 1861. The College of New Jersey, now Princeton University, did likewise on December 20, 1864.

Roger, you nailed them! Pretty good for a fellow who had less than a year formal education. What was Lincoln's comment about getting "through" college?

RE: Extra Credit Questions - Gene C - 05-20-2013 10:20 AM

Probably something like "Don't let school interfere with your education"

RE: Extra Credit Questions - LincolnMan - 05-20-2013 09:03 PM

Who was the last Confederate General to surrender?

RE: Extra Credit Questions - Eva Elisabeth - 05-21-2013 05:04 AM

James Waddell, commander (don't know if he was a general!) of CSS Shenandoah?

RE: Extra Credit Questions - LincolnMan - 05-21-2013 07:27 AM

Good morning Eva. I guess I should have been more specific to say "Army General"- which would exclude your great guess- because he was a naval officer.

RE: Extra Credit Questions - Joe Di Cola - 05-21-2013 08:29 AM

Bill,

Was it E. Kirby Smith?

Joe

RE: Extra Credit Questions - LincolnMan - 05-21-2013 08:36 AM

He is a good guess but not the last one.

RE: Extra Credit Questions - Joe Di Cola - 05-21-2013 09:24 AM

Stand Watie (also in the western theatre)?

Or was it Joseph Shelby? I must admit, this is a great trivia question since it minvolves two theatres, but I am guessing it will be someone in the trans-Mississippi.

That's it Joe! Great work!
