Eva, this is a hard one.

William Lloyd Garrison?

RE: Extra Credit Questions - Eva Elisabeth - 05-13-2013 10:51 AM

Well, indeed, it's a very distant link. Gordon Bennett (jr) sent out one of his journalists for a famous interview with this famous Scotsman, now you'll know him, I ASSUME.

RE: Extra Credit Questions - Laurie Verge - 05-13-2013 11:36 AM

Pinkerton?

RE: Extra Credit Questions - Eva Elisabeth - 05-13-2013 11:57 AM

I'm sorry, Laurie, it neither wasn't him. It really begins to gnaw at my conscience. The journalist was Henry Morton Stanley, and he had to depart for Africa, where the abolitionist was seeking to discover the source of the River Nile.

RE: Extra Credit Questions - RJNorton - 05-13-2013 12:26 PM

David Livingstone?

RE: Extra Credit Questions - Gene C - 05-13-2013 12:31 PM

That's Dr. Livingston, (I presume?)

RE: Extra Credit Questions - Eva Elisabeth - 05-13-2013 01:14 PM

Splendid, perfectly right. (Gene, for the last 20 years I believed he said "assume"). The initial quote is from the inscription of Livingston's gravestone. Lacking a prize of equal value to my relief I send you all my best wishes!

Who is this lady?

One of Mary Lincoln's sisters? I'll guess Ninian Edward's wife - Elizabeth?

RE: Extra Credit Questions - RJNorton - 05-15-2013 09:51 AM

Good try, Joe, but this woman wasn't directly connected/related to Lincoln. However, most folks on the forum will be quite familiar with who she is when the answer is revealed.

Hint #1: She was born in 1815.

RE: Extra Credit Questions - Eva Elisabeth - 05-15-2013 09:57 AM

One of the Blair family?

RE: Extra Credit Questions - RJNorton - 05-15-2013 10:08 AM

Good try, Eva, but not correct.

Hint #2: An actress played her in the movie Lincoln.

RE: Extra Credit Questions - RJNorton - 05-15-2013 01:34 PM

Hint #3: She appears late in the movie.

Lydia Smith.

Best
Rob

Good job, Rob! That is Thaddeus Stevens' housekeeper and apparent "confidante."

More here.
