Joseph had a lesson in hush puppies when he ate at Capt. Billy's on Sunday after the conference. He asked what they were, and I explained the cornmeal dabs that were fried and thrown to the dogs who were begging in the kitchen. At that point in time, I think he said they were good.

O.K. - Now I remember. They were good!

Then I have a genetic problem because my family (all Southerners as you may have guessed) call it stuffing also. We stuff roasting chickens and our holiday turkeys - and we literally stuff it up in those birds and have long-handled stuffing spoons to dig it out with when it's brought to the table. I'm like you, Craig; dressing is something you put on salads (ranch, bleu cheese, Italian, Russian, etc.). Maybe they've changed the rules since I grew up?

Lincoln once told Lamon that he was worried something won't scour. What was Lincoln referring to?

RE: Extra Credit Questions - Gene C - 04-09-2013 09:59 AM

Gettysburg address?

RE: Extra Credit Questions - RJNorton - 04-09-2013 10:09 AM

Asked and answered in 3 minutes. Kudos, Gene!

RE: Extra Credit Questions - LincolnMan - 04-09-2013 10:09 AM

Same as Gene's answer: Gettysburg Address. Somehow, I doubt Lincoln actually said.

Good point, Bill. Lamon can be unreliable, and I am assuming the only source for this is the recollection of Lamon.

RE: Extra Credit Questions - LincolnMan - 04-09-2013 10:47 AM

I think so Roger. I remember hearing Gore Vidal mentioning it as if it had been true, but we both know that Lamon was his source.

John Hay wrote that "hostile journals" described this person as a "shallow, vainglorious, woolly-horse, mule-eating, free-love, "n"-embracing Black Republican; an extravagant, insubordinate, reckless adventurer; a financial spend-thrift and political mountebank." Who were the journals referring too?

RE: Extra Credit Questions - J. Beckert - 04-09-2013 02:07 PM

Charles Sumner?

RE: Extra Credit Questions - LincolnMan - 04-09-2013 02:12 PM

No, not Sumner-good guess though.

RE: Extra Credit Questions - Laurie Verge - 04-09-2013 02:17 PM

Thaddeus Stevens?

RE: Extra Credit Questions - LincolnMan - 04-09-2013 02:31 PM

Laurie: another really good guess but it wasn't him either.

I have to beat her. Seward?

Frémont?
