Wishing You A Speedy Recovery - Laurie Verge - 09-20-2012 09:57 AM

I just want to interject a personal message here. All of us on this forum enjoy the postings of Herb Swingle, and those of us who have known Herb for awhile have admired his years of service to troubled and underprivileged youth in his area of New York.

That work, however, took a turn for the worst a few nights ago. Herb coaches many of these youths, and a winning game ended with a gang of malcontents attacking Herb and his team after a game. In the melee, Herb was beaten and also grazed by a stray bullet. He's recuperating at home now.

We love you, Herb, and are thinking of you. This is certainly a case of "no good deed goes unpunished." It's also a warning to us all to be very careful of our surroundings in today's society. It doesn't always take an incident such as this to bring on an attack.

Herb, I was very sorry to hear what happened to you. Please let us know how you are doing.

I know you were looking forward to hearing Walter Stahr speak and sign copies of his book Seward: Lincoln's Indispensable Man at the Seward House on Tuesday night but I hope you can order it to help pass the time.

OMG - Just goes to show what a world we live in. Someone else on this forum was just robbed at gunpoint a couple of months ago. Herb, recover quickly!

Hope you get better soon Herb.

While your getting better, reflect on how many young people you have had a positive influence on. Without you, they could have been in that gang.
Hang in there Herb, we are all pulling for you and respect you.

I would like to express my thanks and gratitude to all of my "well-wishers".The scariest part of the "mess"is not what did happen, but what could have happened! This was a clear act of gang violence! They won the game and attacked us as we were getting on our buses.
